When people imagine a real-time crime center (RTCC), they usually picture a wall of TV screens with analysts or officers staring at them, waiting for crime to happen. Others get their impression from movies and TV, where law enforcement miraculously locates anyone, anywhere, in seconds. But what is the reality of a real-time crime center? The short answer is that it’s a centralized hub that processes intelligence and supports real-time decision-making for law enforcement. But how they work, and the powerful impact they can have in the community, is far more complex and nuanced than most people realize.
As workers have returned to the office, it’s become clear that organizations need to invest in building environments that are not just digitally secure – but also physically secure.
Whether it’s quickly analyzing hours of surveillance footage or improving access to mission-critical data, artificial intelligence has helped deter crime, expedite investigations and protect law enforcement agents.
While it seems obvious that those who are famous could face higher risks, threats are also greater for those who work in “the sectors that are angry—that get people riled up,” says Michael Evanoff, who headed the U.S. government’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security from 2017 to 2020 and is now CSO of Verkada. “These are pharmaceuticals, energy, healthcare and insurance.”
