Apply for School Safety Federal Grants — Deadline July 30, 2018

It’s not too late to apply for federal grants intended to enhance school safety.
As part of the Students, Teachers, and Officers Preventing (STOP) School Violence Act of 2018, $25 million has been allocated to improve security at schools “through evidence-based school safety programs.”
The funds are being made available via the U.S. Department of Justice’s office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) as part of its School Violence Prevention Program (SVPP). The DOJ recently announced that it is accepting applications through Monday, July 30, 2018. Applications are to be submitted here on the DOJ’s COPS website.
States, units of local government and Indian tribes are eligible for funding. The SVPP will cover 75% of eligible project funding — up to $500,000 — with 25% local match requirement.
Allowable technology and equipment costs include:
Entry control equipment
School site alarm, and protection systems
Communication technology
Emergency alerts
Identification technology, laptops, maps of schools and bus routes
Printers
Social media monitoring
Tracking systems
Video surveillance technology
Security officers, bulletproof vests, firearms and a number of other items are non-allowable costs under SVPP. Be sure to review the program’s FAQs (PDF) for more info.
