Today marks an exciting milestone for our team: we’re opening an international engineering hub in Krakow, Poland. This new hub will become a critical extension of our global team as we develop the operating system for the physical world.
Why we chose Poland
Poland was a natural choice for us when we thought about growing our engineering team outside of the US. We have been working with engineers in Krakow on projects like hardware bring-up and device security for more than two years, and as we began to explore expansion opportunities, we found excitement building among these engineers about our products and projects, working culture, and broader engineering vision. To build on this momentum, we’re now formally establishing Krakow as our engineering hub in Europe.
Who is on our team
The driving motivation behind our expansion is the incredible engineers on the founding team in Krakow: they have so many strengths and skills that add tremendous value to our growing engineering organization. They have especially important technical depth in low level systems, touching new areas of expertise beyond our existing team.
We were also excited by their enthusiasm about building cutting-edge products with an attention to detail and care. It matches what we try to foster within our engineering culture and reinforces our focus on small teams with high ownership and autonomy.
Our vision for this international engineering hub is to bring the best engineers in Europe together to work on cutting-edge hardware and software products. As our Poland-based team scales up, they will work on end-to-end systems, fully owning products from ideation and design to prototyping and iteration to mass production.
What we’re building
Verkada was founded in 2016 with the vision to modernize the world of physical security, starting with security cameras and an intuitive cloud-based platform. In just six years, we’ve expanded to include five additional product lines: door-based access control, air quality sensors, alarms, guest, and mailroom management. Our customers around the world – from schools and hospitals to warehouses and retail stores – trust our solutions to help them keep their people and property safe and secure every day.
To power our platform and product lines, our team builds traditional systems, machine learning models, and computer vision frameworks that balance a mixture of edge and cloud compute and optimize for latency, bandwidth, and speed across different real-world environments.
Our platform today is massively distributed: across our current product lines, we manage millions of CPU cores and hundreds of petabytes of data – and these numbers double roughly every year. While our platform is vast and complex, we have a relentless focus on creating a simple, easy-to-use experience for our customers across the entire ecosystem.
How our team works together
Our engineering team values a high degree of individual ownership and impact, which we've maintained since the early days when we only had a handful of engineers. Today we have a few hundred engineers, but we still keep teams small and give each one broad scope and challenging goals. This approach brings out the best ideas and helps us continue to build the most innovative products for our customers.
We take a similar approach to our tech stack: we own the full stack, all the way down to the hardware, so that we can fully optimize everything we build. We’re especially excited about the value that our Poland-based team will bring here: Krzysztof Mikoda, our Director of Engineering, has decades of experience in this space building firmware for everything from automotive, telecommunication, in-door positioning to Jump Bikes and smart home automation.
Why you should join us
There’s never been a better time to join us – we are continuing to rapidly expand following our $205 million Series D fundraise in September. In just the last twelve months, Verkada grew its team by 60%, opened three new offices, and nearly doubled total revenue year-over-year.
We’ve already started hiring firmware developers, backend engineers, and others to join the team in Poland, and we’re looking for more great talent to join us as we redefine the ways that organizations protect and manage their physical operations. View all of our open engineering roles here.
